Kindle Sync

Becoming reads your highlights from Amazon’s Kindle Notebook — the same books, highlights, and notes you see at read.amazon.com/notebook. There are two ways to run the sync, and both land in the same library:

Whichever you pick, you need an Amazon account with Kindle highlights. If you’re not sure they’re there, open read.amazon.com/notebook and confirm your books and highlights show — some books don’t sync their highlights to the cloud.

From the Becoming app

Choose Kindle. During onboarding it’s Connect with Kindle in the list of sources; afterwards, open Integrations and pick Kindle. Either opens the Connect Kindle screen.
Amazon’s own sign-in page opens inside that screen. Sign in there — Becoming never sees your password, and the Amazon session stays in that screen; it isn’t shared with anything else in the app. Already signed in? Tap Already signed in? Sync now.
Becoming reads your Kindle Notebook book by book and shows its progress. Keep the screen open — the sync runs inside it, so leaving mid-sync throws the work away. Cancel is the safe way out: it stops at the next book and keeps what’s been read so far, and you can run the sync again later to finish the rest.
When it finishes, you’ll see how many books, highlights, and notes are in your library. Tap Done (or Continue, during onboarding).

Highlighted more since? Open Integrations → Kindle and run the sync again — only new highlights are added.

From the web app, with the Chrome extension

There is one Becoming Chrome extension, and it does four jobs. Installing it once covers all of them:

Kindle is the one it’s named for, and the rest of this section is about that. Installation is the same whichever brought you here.

Prerequisites

Google Chrome on a desktop computer (the extension isn’t available on mobile — on your phone, use the Becoming app instead; open Kindle in a phone’s browser and Becoming says so, with a Get the app link)
An Amazon account with Kindle highlights, signed in at read.amazon.com
A Becoming account (signed in to the web app)

Installation

Open the Becoming extension on the Chrome Web Store.
Click Add to Chrome.
Click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar and pin the Becoming extension for easy access.

You can also install the extension directly from the sync flow below.

How to Sync

Sign in to the Becoming web app first. The extension uses your web app session.
In your library, choose Add source and pick Kindle (or open Integrations → Kindle). This opens the Connect Kindle screen.
Make sure you’re signed in to Amazon at read.amazon.com in the same browser — that’s where Becoming reads your highlights from.
Click Install Extension. If the extension isn’t installed yet, this opens the Chrome Web Store — add it, then return to this screen and click Install Extension again.
Once the extension is installed, clicking Install Extension starts the sync. A Syncing Kindle highlights dialog runs while Becoming fetches your Kindle Notebook in the background — there’s no separate window or tab to watch. Your books, highlights, and notes appear when it finishes.

Staying in sync

After your first sync, the extension syncs your Kindle highlights once a day in the background, while Chrome is open. It does this as long as:

you’re signed in to Becoming,
Kindle is connected in Becoming (pressing Disconnect there stops it), and
you’re signed in to Amazon in Chrome.

If Chrome was closed when a sync was due, it catches up soon after you open it. To sync right away, open Integrations → Kindle and click Sync Now.

In the Becoming mobile app, Kindle syncs only while its sync screen is open.

What Gets Imported

Books — Title, author, and cover information.
Highlights — All highlighted passages from each book.
Notes — Any notes you’ve added to highlights in Kindle.

Deduplication

If you sync multiple times — from the app, the extension, or both — Becoming automatically detects highlights you’ve already imported. Only new highlights are added — no duplicates.

Want to start over with a full re-import? Open Integrations and, on the Kindle card, choose Reset Sync — on the web it’s a button on the card; in the app it’s in the card’s menu. It clears your Kindle-imported library state and rebuilds it with a fresh full sync.

Troubleshooting

Import doesn’t find any books

Open read.amazon.com/notebook and confirm your books and highlights show there — some books don’t sync their highlights to the cloud.
In the extension: make sure you’re signed in to your Amazon account at read.amazon.com in the same browser, the Becoming extension is installed, and you’re signed in to the Becoming web app.
In the app: if the sync ends with No highlights found, the Amazon account you signed in with has no highlights yet — check it’s the account you read on, then tap Try again.

Amazon signed you out part-way through (app)

Amazon sometimes ends the session mid-sync. Sign in again on the same screen to pick up where it left off.

Nothing happens when you click Install Extension

If the extension isn’t installed yet, the button opens the Chrome Web Store instead of syncing. Add the extension, then return to the screen and click Install Extension again.
Make sure you’re signed in to the Becoming web app.

Import seems stuck

Large libraries may take a few minutes. In the app, keep the Connect Kindle screen open and watch the book count; in the web app, wait for the Syncing Kindle highlights dialog to finish.
If it’s been more than a few minutes: in the app, tap Cancel (what’s been read so far is kept) and run the sync again; in the web app, reload the page and click Install Extension again.
