Kindle Clippings

Every Kindle e-reader keeps a plain text file called My Clippings.txt. Each time you highlight a passage or add a note, the device appends it to this file. If you read on a physical Kindle that isn’t always online, this is the most complete record of what you’ve marked.

Get My Clippings.txt off your Kindle

  1. Connect your Kindle to your computer with a USB cable.
  2. The Kindle shows up as a drive (or device) in your file browser.
  3. Open the documents folder.
  4. Copy My Clippings.txt to your computer.

Upload it to Becoming

  1. In the web app, go to your library and choose Add source.
  2. Pick MyClippings.txt.
  3. Select the My Clippings.txt file you copied.
  4. Becoming previews the books it found, then imports your highlights. (Standalone notes in My Clippings.txt are skipped — only highlighted passages are imported.)

Becoming reads the My Clippings.txt format in English, Spanish, German, and Japanese, so highlights import correctly whatever language your Kindle is set to.
